Russia recognises Crimea independence

Russian President Vladimir Putin i has recognised Crimea as a "sovereign and independent state" hours after the EU and US imposed sanctions on Russian officials and MPs. The move could pave the way for annexation, with Putin to speak on the subject in parliament in Moscow on Tuesday.
