EP President Schulz on Swiss referendum on immigration

Met dank overgenomen van Voorzitter Europees Parlement (EP-voorzitter) i, gepubliceerd op maandag 10 februari 2014.

The President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz i made the following statement on the outcome of the referendum in Switzerland on free movement of people:

"I regret the outcome of the referendum and I take note of the closeness of the vote. I accept the democratic decision of the Swiss people.

The Swiss government now has to work out which conclusions it draws from the referendum and whether it is possible to make this decision compatible with its international commitments in particular its agreements with the EU. The EU will honour its commitments towards Switzerland and expects its partners to do the same.

Switzerland enjoys the benefits of the internal market; freedom of movement is a crucial pillar of the internal market.

The decision of the Swiss people and the concerns expressed need proper analysis and calm rational reactions. Switzerland remains a key partner for the European Union."
