Communication officers overseeing the EU's five Structural and Investment Funds (ESIF), journalists and stakeholders met in Brussels on 9 and 10 December 2013 to explore ways of telling the story of Europe. In 24 workshops, the participants shared communication practices and experiences of successful communication about the Structural and Investment Funds.

The conference was co-organised by four European Commission Directorates-Generals (DG): DG for Agriculture and Rural Development, DG for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion, DG for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries and DG for Regional and Urban Policy. They together manage a very significant part of the EU budget under the five ESIFs: the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), the European Social Fund (ESF), the Cohesion Fund (CF), the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD), and the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF).

"Telling the story" brought together, for the first time, communication officers from national and regional authorities with journalists, representatives of stakeholder organisations, European networks and managing authorities.

The event focused on how to better tell the story of Europe, through its achievements on the ground via the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development, as well as through the other European Structural and Investment Funds.

Altogether, some 800 participants from all 28 EU countries attended the event, which aimed to:

• Boost collaboration between EU, national and regional officials involved in communicating about European Structural and Investment Funds;

• Provide a sound basis for the communication strategies that will accompany ESIF programmes during the 2014-2020 funding period;

• Share good practices in communication and facilitate mutual learning between different countries and funds.

During the conference the Awards ceremony for the 2013 edition of the CAP Communication Awards took place. It recognised best-practice examples in the field of communication on agriculture and rural development under the categories 'Communication to stakeholders', 'Communication to the public' and 'Innovative communication'.
