Close to 230 000 participants had taken part in more than 10 700 projects granted by the Youth in Action Programme in 2012.

The Youth in Action Programme is the EU Programme for all young people. The Programme aims to inspire a sense of active European citizenship and tolerance among young Europeans and to involve them in shaping the Union’s future by boosting their participation in democratic life. It promotes mobility, non-formal learning and intercultural dialogue among European youth, and encourages the inclusion of all young people, particularly those with fewer opportunities, by supporting a large variety of activities, including youth exchanges, transnational voluntary service as well as training and networking for youth workers.

As from 2014 on, the new Erasmus i+ programme combines all the EU's current schemes for education, training, youth and sport, including the Lifelong Learning Programme (Erasmus, Leonardo da Vinci i, Comenius i, Grundtvig i), Youth in Action and five international cooperation programmes (Erasmus Mundus i, Tempus, Alfa, Edulink and the programme for cooperation with industrialised countries). This will make it easier for applicants to understand the opportunities available, while other simplifications will also facilitate access.

Erasmus+ aims at boosting skills and employability, and modernising education, training and youth work. The 7 year programme will have a budget of €14.7 billion. This represents a 40% increase compared to current spending levels and shows the EU's commitment to investing in these areas.
