Europees Parlement opent met minuut stilte voor Filipijnen (en)

President Schulz held a minute’s silence for victims of Typhoon Haiyan, which devastated wide stretches of the Philippines on 8 November, killing more than 2,500 people and leaving 660,000 homeless. He called on the international community to provide emergency humanitarian aid and long-term support for reconstruction.

Even ten days after the 300 km/h typhoon abated, some disaster areas were still cut off from the outside world. The death toll was still rising, an estimated 22,000 people were still missing, and hundreds of thousands of survivors were still waiting for clean drinking water, rice and tents, he said, stressing that the Philippines needed outside help.

Noting that the EU and others had already pledged to provide both emergency humanitarian aid and long-term support for reconstruction, he nonetheless urged the international community to do more, pointing out that an estimated 11 million Filipinos were directly affected.

Mr Schulz also welcomed 150 students from 33 countries, including EU member states, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine, who were in Strasbourg for a Euronest Scola 2013 two-day debate on the key Eastern Partnership issues, from democracy building to energy efficiency.
