Commenting on the 25th anniversary of the Sakharov Prize, the President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz stated:

"This week is a very special week for the Sakharov Prize. Not only is the European Parliament very proud to award Malala Yousafzai with the 2013 Sakharov Prize for freedom of thought on Wednesday, we are also celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Prize.

For the last 25 years, the European Parliament has stressed the importance of freedom of thought, has encouraged all voices to speak up and awarded the bravest fighters for human rights.

Twenty-two laureates or their representatives honoured us with their presence in Strasbourg this week. It is also a great opportunity for the Sakharov's network to reinforce their mutual solidarity and hold exchanges on human rights issues.

Our thoughts are with the former laureates whose freedom of movement is restricted and could not join us. Our thoughts are with the families of the laureates who have passed away. We don't forget you, your fights live on.”
