The Permanent Representatives of the EU Member States have on October 17 in Brussels validated the agreement reached with the European Parliament on the European Social Fund regulation which sets out the criteria for funding employment-related projects in the next EU multiannual budget for 2014-2020.

“Promoting employment in the European Union is one of the key priorities of the Lithuanian Presidency of the EU Council. The agreement with the European Parliament is a balanced compromise and the decision to approve the outcome of the negotiations is a significant step towards the implementation of the Youth Employment Initiative, proposed by the European Council,” said chair of the COREPER ambassador Raimundas Karoblis.

The ESF regulation is one of the legislative acts forming the Cohesion Policy package. It is the EU instrument supporting employment, education, training and social inclusion and will also enable the launch the Youth Employment Initiative, which in particular aims at supporting young people not in education, employment or training in the regions with the youth unemployment rate above 25 per cent.
