Developing policies to combat gender-based violence (GBV) is a priority in the EU, which must be based on solid data and information. Existing data fails to provide a global picture of the prevalence of GBV in the EU as it covers only a few Member States (MS) and only partially.

The European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE) is strengthening its focus on information and data-collection on GBV in 2013-2015. With this EIGE aims to support the European Commission and the Member States in their work on GBV. EIGE launches a consultation process with relevant stakeholders by organising a consultation meeting during the Lithuanian Presidency i of the EU Council to take place on 17-18 September, in Vilnius. The meeting will mark the first step towards improving the collection of data on GBV.
