Litouwse president nodigt Oekraïense president uit voor top Oostelijk Partnerschap in november (en)
President Dalia Grybauskaitė i spoke by phone with President Viktor Yanukovych of Ukraine. President Grybauskaitė underlined that closer cooperation between the Eastern Partnership countries and the European Union was a top priority on the Lithuanian EU Presidency agenda, and invited the President of Ukraine to the Vilnius summit scheduled for this coming November.
"We hope that the Vilnius summit will open a new chapter in relations between the EU and Eastern Partnership countries. The European Union is ready to sign an association agreement with Ukraine. However, successful conclusion of the agreement will be largely predetermined by Ukraine's progress in securing the fundamental principles of democracy and human rights," the President said.
The President pointed out that Ukraine had to make concrete steps to this end - to resolve Yulia Tymoshenko's issue and the problem of selective justice, to pass legislation against corruption and discrimination that complied with European standards, and to continue reforming the election and legal systems.
