09/07/2013 - Today, Mr Shimpei Matsushita - Japanese Parliamentary Vice-Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) - is visiting the Emergency Response Centre (ERC) in Brussels.

The ERC visit was preceded by a first dialogue held at technical level between Japanese and EU experts yesterday, followed by a meeting with Kristalina Georgieva i, the EU Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response.

The EU's cooperation with Japan in the field of disaster management has significant role to play at global level in this time of more frequent disasters. After the huge Eastern Japanese earthquake, tsunami and resulting Fukushima nuclear disaster, European solidarity with Japanese people was shown through the activation of the European Civil Protection Mechanism facilitating the delivery of 400 tons of relief items provided by EU Member States and the mobilization of € 10 million in humanitarian assistance. In the future, mutual support and cooperation between Japan and the EU in prevention, preparedness and response to disasters will be facilitated, and the exchange of knowledge and experiences strengthened.
