The ceremony of the European Union Prize for contemporary architecture/ Mies van der Rohe award and the Special Mention for an Emerging Architect will take place on 6 June in Barcelona.
The award ceremony for the 2013 European Union Prize for contemporary architecture, as well as the Special Mention for an Emerging Architect will take place on 6 June at the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion in Barcelona, Spain. The event marks the 25th anniversary of the Prize and will be followed by the opening of the exhibition "Constructing Europe. 25 Years of Architecture" at the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya, as well as by a debated entitled "Breaking New Ground". This debate, led by the prize winners, leading architects, critics and students, will continue throughout 2013 and 2014 at European Universities and institutions, together with the exhibition.
Last April, the European Commission and the Mies van der Rohe Foundation announced that Harpa from Reykjavik, Iceland and Nave de Música from Madrid, Spain were the winners of the 2013 EU Prize for contemporary architecture and the Emerging architect special mention.
Launched in 1987 and co-funded by the EU Culture Programme and the Fundació Mies van der Rohe, the EU Prize for Contemporary Architecture is the most prestigious award in European architecture and takes places every two years. The Prize consists of € 60,000 and the Special Mention consists of € 20,000 with both receiving a sculpture that evokes the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion of Barcelona - the symbol for this Prize: excellence and innovation in conceptual and constructive terms.
