European Affairs journalist, Peter O’Donnell, talks to the European Parliament rapporteur for fundamental rights, democracy and the rule of law in Hungary, Rui Tavares i MEP (Greens), on his report.

Rui Tavares MEP is committed to overcome the existing divisions between left and right wing political groups. He underlines this specific issue is not a matter of left and right but of a shared framework of democracy and fundamental rights.

On the 16th of February, the European Parliament adopted a resolution expressing “grave concerns” about the practice of democracy, rule of law, human and social rights, checks and balances and equal opportunities in Hungary.

“If these changes do not occur in an open and transparent way, with the cooperation of the opposition, with rights for the opposition, then you can very strongly assert they [Hungary] are not converging with the Union values.”
