In January, Irish food inspectors announced horsemeat had been found in frozen beef burgers sold in the United Kingdom (UK) and the Republic of Ireland. Two weeks later, the UK also informed the European Commission (EC) that a British company had been selling beef lasagne - supplied by a French company - which contained horsemeat. European Affairs journalist Peter O’Donnell is joined by Tom Hanney, Irish Ambassador to the EU, to discuss the horsemeat scandal.

Based on the evidence gathered to date, this scandal does not represent a public health or food safety crisis but it is definitely an issue of fraudulent labelling.

“What will help to restore confidence is if we come up with legal proposals relating to the country of origin labelling on all beef products.”
