Statement by EU High Representative, Catherine Ashton i, following the passing away of President Zillur Rahman

of Bangladesh

The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the Commission issued the following statement today:

"It is with great sadness that I have learnt of the passing away of President Zillur Rahman. I wish to express my sincere condolences and sympathy to his family and to the people of Bangladesh.

President Rahman was a widely respected and well-liked leader, and a key figure in the recent history of Bangladesh. He will be rememberedfor his courageous contribution to building an independent and democratic country. The European Union will continue to stand by Bangladesh."
