Statement by the Spokesperson of EU High Representative, Catherine Ashton i, on the Appeal Court decision concerning Human Rights

defenders in Cambodia

The spokesperson of Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the Commission, issued the following statement today:

"The High Representative takes note of the decision of the Appeal Court of 14 March 2013, which allows the release of Mr Mam Sonando, Head of the Association of Democrats of Cambodia and Director of the Beehive radio, though he remains convicted. This decision hopefully reflects a step towards a more conducive environment for freedom of expression and the independence of the media, which are particularlyimportant in view of the upcoming Cambodian elections this July."
