Van Rompuy bezoekt Dublin in kader van EU-voorzitterschap Ieren (en)

The Irish EU Presidency gets into full swing with a visit to Dublin by Herman Van Rompuy i, President of the European Council, on January 9.

Discussions will centre on Ireland’s Presidency programme “For Stability, Jobs and Growth”, which will be published in the morning of 9 January

Herman Van Rompuy, President of the European Council, will meet tomorrow with Taoiseach Enda Kenny i and Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore to discuss the programme and priorities of the Irish Presidency centred on promoting stability and stimulating growth and job creation across Europe.

During the meeting the Taoiseach and Tánaiste will highlight the main objectives of the Presidency over the next six months which include securing stability in the European economy through the Banking Union and stronger and more effective economic governance at EU level. They will also discuss the business of the European Council over the next few months, including trade policy, energy and the European Semester process.

Discussions will also focus on the EU’s future financing and the EU budget for 2014-2020, which will be the subject of the European Council meeting in February.

The Taoiseach and Tánaiste will also outline the Presidency’s plans to tackle youth unemployment across the EU, to promote economic growth through the Single Market and to place a renewed focus on and investment in research and innovation. Irish plans to boost EU trade and exports with key partners, including the US, will also be discussed.

The meeting will be followed by a working lunch and a press conference at 13.45.

President Van Rompuy will speak at 3pm at an event organised by IBEC (Irish Business & Employers’ Federation) on the theme “Driving Europe's Recovery -The Way Forward“, before returning to Brussels later in the afternoon.
