At the European Council of 14th December, EU Heads of State and Government invited the European Commission to put forward a proposal for a new Macro-Regional Strategy for the Adriatic-Ionian Region before the end of 2014.

Building on the successes of the current Macro-Regions in the Danube and Baltic Sea regions, the Commission will now proceed to draw up a draft strategy for the 8 countries concerned (Greece, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro and Albania).

Commissioner for Regional Policy, Johannes Hahn i met with the Foreign Ministers of the participating countries on 19 November to discuss the main elements of the future territorial cooperation of the Adriatic-Ionian countries.

The European Council also called for the full implementation of the revised Baltic Sea Strategy and for a deeper cooperation with the Northern Dimension.
