Statement by EU i High Representative Catherine Ashton i following her meeting with President Hadi of Yemen

on 3 October 2012

Catherine Ashton, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the Commission, made today the following statement:

"Yesterday I had the pleasure of meeting with President Hadi of Yemen to discuss developments in his country. I expressed my appreciation for the efforts undertaken by the President and his government to implement reforms through a peaceful and orderly transition that will lead to a better future for Yemen and its people. I also expressed my concern at attempts to derail this delicate transition. Stability, security and investment should go hand in hand.

We discussed the political, security and economic crises the government faces. I assured him that the EU will deliver on its political and financial commitments and I hope the whole international community will follow suit. Yemen faces an exceptional situation and requires exceptional levels of assistance. The EU is ready to help Yemen to further develop the strategy President Hadi has been pursuing since his appointment."
