Paphos (Cyprus) en Aarhus (Denemarken) in de selectie voor Europese Culturele Hoofdstad 2017 (en)

On Friday 14, the Cypriot city of Paphos was recommended for the title of European Capital of Culture in 2017 by an independent selection panel. The other Cypriot city in contention was Nicosia.

On 24 August, the independent panel proposed Aarhus (Denmark) to be the other European Capital of Culture for 2017. The formal nomination of both winning cities by the EU i's Council of Ministers will take place in May 2013.

Androulla Vassiliou i, the European Commissioner i responsible for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth, stated: "I warmly congratulate Paphos and Aarhus for being selected as be the European Capital of culture in 2017. I am sure the cities and its citizens will participate with enthusiasm in the preparations for the year. The European Capital of Culture has an important role to play in promoting the diversity of Europe's cultures. The initiative is also a catalyst for the transformation of cities, bringing substantial economic and social benefits to its citizens. I wish Paphos and Aarhus much success."
