The Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union would like to see the continuing strengthening of the Court of Justice of the European Union as well as the expansion of its jurisdiction. This is what the President of the Republic of Cyprus Mr Demetris Christofias said during a meeting today, September 4, at the Presidential Palace, with an EU Court of Justice delegation headed by its president, Mr. Vassilis Skouris.

During the meeting, which took place within the framework of the Cyprus Presidency, President Christofias said that “Cyprus considers the EU Court of Justice an institution which can contribute as a catalyst in the solidification and deepening of the European law, the principles on which the EU is founded, especially the rule of law, the respect for human rights, security and justice.”

He noted that the Court constitutes a pioneering judicial institution that is a role model for national courts and at the same time reinforces the image of the EU towards third countries, as an organisation that promotes these principles.

Issues relating to the modification of the Institution of the Court and the reformation of the Rules of Procedure, were also discussed at the meeting.

President Christofias and the members of the delegation of the Court discussed and agreed that there can be no permanent diversions from the acquis communautaire, the accumulated body of EU law and obligations, in the event of a solution to the Cyprus problem.

Also present at the meeting was the Deputy Minister Deputy Minister for EU Affairs, Ambassador Andreas D. Mavroyiannis.
