Statement by the Spokesperson of EU i High Representative Catherine Ashton i on the publication of the Report of the Commission of National Inquiry in the Maldives

The spokesperson of High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice President of the Commission Catherine Ashton issued the following statement today:

"The High Representative welcomes the report of the Commission of National Inquiry on the transfer of power in the Maldives on 7 February 2012, takes note of its conclusions and recommendations and calls upon all parties in the Maldives to respect their engagement to accept the Commission's findings.

The High Representative calls upon the leaders of Maldivian political parties to engage in the process of political dialogue with a view to the consolidation of the democratic process, leading to Presidential elections, in line with the Constitution of the Maldives, as soon as possible.

The High Representative calls once again on the authorities and political parties in the Maldives to refrain from acts of provocation which may imperil this process and to exercise restraint in the wake of the release of the report of the Commission of National Inquiry."
