Statement by High Representative Catherine Ashton i on the appointment of the new Prime Minister of Egypt

The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the Commission issued the following statement today:

"I congratulate Prime Minister Hesham Qandil on his nomination as Prime Minister and wish him every success. His appointment is another step forward in the country's democratic transition. As I told President Mor si last week when we met in Cairo, we look forward to working with him and the new Government which I trust will be inclusive and representative of Egypt's diversity.

The EU knows that Egypt faces many social, political and economic challenges. As I discussed with President Mor si, we are ready to work with him and provide assistance at this crucial time in Egypt's history, working in close partnership with Egypt's new democratic authorities."
