Portuguese doctors on Wednesday began a 48-hour strike in protest at EU-IMF-imposed austerity measures, such as higher prescription charges for elderly people. The health ministry said 4,500 operations and 400,000 consultative appointments are likely to be cancelled in the industrial action, the BBC reports.
