HD Martin Schulz makes an official visit to France from 12 to 14 July

The President of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz, accompanied by a delegation of senior MEPs, will travel to Paris from 12 to 14 July for official meetings with the French authorities. At the invitation of President François Hollande he will attend the ceremonies to mark French National Day.

The purpose of the visit is to strengthen cooperation with the President of the Republic and the French Government. Immediately after the election on 6 May, both the President and his government confirmed their willingness to work with the Community institutions and, first and foremost, with the European Parliament. President Schulz will be seeking to establish a greater degree of consensus on the need to strike a balance between responsible budgetary policies and investment to foster growth and employment as a way out of the current crisis.

With his counterparts from the National Assembly and the Senate, Martin Schulz will discuss the role to be played by the national parliaments and the European Parliament in countering any danger of deparliamentarisation and of a widening of the democratic deficit in the European Union in the light of the political decisions which the EU is currently taking to address the financial crisis and the moves to speed up the process of political, economic, budgetary and fiscal integration.

Finally, at a time when unemployment is hitting young people particularly hard and undermining the confidence of an entire generation in the future, in politics and in Europe, President Schulz will meet representatives of the association Génération précaire.

At the invitation of the President of the Republic, Mr Schulz will attend the ceremonies held to mark French National Day in the company of a Parliament delegation comprising Gianni Pittella, first Vice-President, Joseph Daul, Chair of the PPE Group, Catherine Trautmann, Chair of the French delegation in the S&D Group, Elmar Brok, Chair of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, and Arnaud Danjean, Chair of the Subcommittee on Security and Defence.
