Tárki Social Research Institute, one of the largest independent research institutions in Hungary, organized on June 1st a workshop on active ageing in Budapest where three new relevant studies were presented: “Intergenerational solidarity in light of national transfer accounts”, “Causes of low employment in population over 50 in Hungary” and “Relations and well-being of older people in Europe.”
Participants in the workshop drew attention to the fact that some of the main targets of the current European Year 2012 are to strengthen cooperation between generations and to increase the social recognition of the elderly. Behind these goals, they remarked, there is a need to enhance the integration of the elderly, their social and family cohesion, as well as the employment opportunities for people over 50.
During the workshop it was reminded that these goals can be achieved by changes of attitude and structural adjustments, but in order to do so these questions have to be addressed both at the professionals and the public opinion level, not leaving them just as a “communication” issue.
Tárki institute, specialized in research in the fields of social policy and the social consequences of economic policies, will organise a conference in September to follow-up.
