Schaken stimuleert solidariteit tussen generaties (en)
Exhibition Chess Games promoting the European Year for Solidarity between Generations were part on May 5th of a bilateral youth exchange project implemented at Thessaloniki (Greece) by the European Commission Youth In Action programme and the Life Long Learning Greek Foundation.
40 youngsters aged 15-25 years old from the Skakistikos Omilos Panoramatos NGO in Greece and from the Boqueixon Municipality of Spain partnered up and participated in a weekly program, promoting the European Year 2012 and intercultural learning.
The idea was for two chess players representing different generations to collaborate in simulaneous chess games involving a total of one hundred chess fans. The event was a great success and the two partners aim to repeat the event in the future, having demonstrated that chess is a great tool for intergenerational dialogue.
The main organisers behind the event were the European Social Fund (ESF) Actions Coordination and Monitoring Authority, the General Secretariat of Management of European Funds, and the Ministry of Labour and Social Security.
