Statement by the Spokesperson of High Representative Catherine Ashton on the presidential elections in the Dominican Republic
The spokesperson of Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the Commission, issued the following statement today:
"The High Representative has noted the outcome of the presidential elections in the Dominican Republic in which the Dominican people have expressed their will peacefully and in an orderly way in the ballot of 20 May. She commends the Dominican Republic authorities for the smooth organisation of the elections and regrets the incidents that nevertheless marred the election day.
The High Representative congratulates Mr Danilo Medina for his election as President of the Dominican Republic and looks forward to working with the new leadership to strengthen EU-Dominican Republic relations.
The European Union is a long-standing partner of the Dominican Republic and will keep its commitment to the development of the country aimed at building a better future for the Dominican people."
