Statement by the spokesperson of EU High representative Catherine Ashton on release of hostages by the FARC in

Colombia

The spokesperson of Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the Commission, issued the following statement today:

"The High Representative welcomes the liberation of ten members of the security forces who had been held hostage by the FARC. While she shares the happiness of the families and the Colombian people and government for the safe return of the freed hostages, she reiterates her call for an immediate and unconditional liberation of all remaining hostages still held in captivity.

The FARC's stated intention to refrain from taking hostages for ransom is encouraging. However, the High Representative calls on the FARC to finally heed the demand of the Colombian people for a sustainable peace in the country, in democracy andfull respect of human rights. "
