Statement by Catherine Ashton i, High Representative of the EU, on the second round of the presidential election in Senegal

Following the second round of the presidential election in Senegal, Catherine Ashton, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the Commission, today made the following statement:

"I congratulate the people of Senegal and their leaders, the political parties and civil society for the democratic spirit they have shown. Thanks to the attitude of its citizens and authorities, today is a great victory for democracy, in Senegal and in Africa as a whole.

I take note of the provisional results, which indicate a clear victory for Macky Sail, and I congratulate him on it. I commend the sense of responsibility shown by the outgoing President, Abdoulaye Wade.

Finally, I would like to thank Mr Thijs Berman i, Member of the European Parliament, as Chief Observer of the EU Election Observation Mission, and his team, as well as the European Parliament delegation led by Mr Santiago Fisas Ayxela, for their active commitment to helping to increase the transparency and credibility of the electoral process.
