Voorzitter EP feliciteert nieuwe Duitse president (en)

The President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz i made the following statement on the election of new President of Germany Joachim Gauck:

"I congratulate the new German President Joachim Gauck on his election. I am sure Joachim Gauck will be an excellent President of Germany. I look forward to working with President Gauck and welcoming him to the European Parliament in due course.

President Gauck played a crucial role in reuniting the hearts and minds of people from both sides of the former divided Germany. We need to demonstrate such unity and solidarity today in the European Union of today.

Germany, as ever, has a crucial role in shaping a Europe that delivers stability, economic growth and prosperity."
