The Commission will present its new strategy on animal welfare, when the topic is discussed at a conference in Bruxelles hosted in cooperation with the Danish EU Presidency.

The conference on animal welfare to be hosted by the Commission and the Danish Presidency will focus on enforcement of the rules, new research and the importance of consumer behaviour. The conference will take place in Brussels 29 February - 1 March.

“European citizens care deeply about animal welfare. Recently, one million Europeans have signed a petition on maximum transportation time for live animals for slaughter. This makes an impression on me and provides food for thought for all EU politicians. So I am looking forward to this conference, which hopefully will be a stepping stone for real and significant improvements in the lives of animals all across Europe,” states Danish Minister of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries, Mette Gjerskov.

The official name of the conference is “Empowering consumers and creating market opportunities for animal welfare”. At the conference the Commission will present its new strategy on animal welfare and a wide range of stakeholders including researchers, representatives from the food industries and NGOs are invited to present their views on how consumer empowerment can enhance animal welfare.

Furthermore the conference will deal with questions about how to enhance the enforcement of existing rules, and researchers will present the most recent developmens in the field of animal welfare.
