Brussels, 28 January 2012

Statement by the Spokesperson of High Representative Catherine Ashton on the ratification of the Rome Statute of International Criminal Court by Guatemala

The spokesperson of Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the Commission, issued the following statement today:

"The High Representative warmly welcomes the decision by the Guatemalan Parliament on 26 January to ratify the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court and congratulates Guatemala on this achievement. This decision is a strong signal confirming the commitment of the Government and the legislative power to the rule of law and an international rules-based order.

The EU is looking forward to a rapid completion of the ratification process in order to welcome Guatemala joining the ever-growing number of States Parties to the Rome Statute.

The European Union strongly supports the International Criminal Court, and uses this opportunity to call upon all states which have not yet done so to accede to the Rome Statute. "
