Statement by High Representative Catherine Ashton on the election of Ms. Bensouda as next ICC Prosecutor

Catherine Ashton, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the Commission made the following statement:

"I warmly welcome the election of Ms. Fatou Bensouda as next Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court and congratulate her on her appointment by the Assembly of State Parties of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court in New York on 12 December.

The European Union is and remains committed to supporting the Court in its endeavor to the fight against impunity of the most serious crimes of concern to the international community.

I also wish to express our sincere gratitude to the outgoing prosecutor, Mr. Luis Moreno-Ocampo for his dedication and commitment to the work of the Court."
