The Chief of the General Staff of the Polish Armed Forces, General Mieczyslaw Cieniuch, will host the Away Days of the European Union Military Committee in Cracow on 18th-19th October. This is the latest event organised within the framework of the Polish Presidency of the European Council.

During the meeting, to be chaired by General Håkan Syrén, Military Representatives of the Defence Chiefs and representatives of EU institutions tasked with defence issues will focus on the development of the Common Security and Defence Policy. Particular attention will be devoted to improvement of the EU's effectiveness in the sphere of crisis response through the upgrading of operation planning and management mechanisms, strengthening of Battle Groups and the boosting - despite the current financial crisis - of essential defensive capabilities. European defence integration - wherever viable and desirable - is another topic on the agenda.

The meeting programme also envisages visits to the Headquarters of the Polish Special Forces, the 2nd Mechanised Corps, and the 6th Air Assault Brigade as well sightseeing in Cracow and a tour of the famous Wieliczka Salt Mine.

The European Union Military Committee (EUMC) is the highest EU military consultative and advisory body, composed of the Defence Chiefs of the Member States, represented by their permanent Military Representatives (MilReps). The current Polish Military Representative is Major General Janusz Bojarski. The EUMC has an advisory role: it recommends specific measures to the Political and Security Committee and drafts instructions for the European Union Military Staff. The EUMC is supported by the Military Working Group, the Military Staff and other EU agencies. Its permanent chairman is a four-star general from one of the Member States. Currently, the post is held by General Håkan Syrén from Sweden. The chairman stays in regular contact with the Presidency concerning the EU's military programmes and initiatives. Once a week he chairs meetings of the EUMC, attended by the 27 Military Representatives from the Member States as well as representatives of the Military Staff and other EU agencies active in the defence sphere.
