Verklaring EP-voorzitter Buzek over de rol van Duitsland in bestrijden financiële crisis (en)
The President of the European Parliament, Jerzy Buzek, made the following statement at today's joint press point with the Federal Chancellor of Germany, Angela Merkel:
"I am very glad to welcome you, Madame Chancellor, to the European Parliament. It is a very important day for us. We had a very deep and very sincere discussion with the Conference of Presidents on the current situation in the European Union.
You and your country are a solid rock of European integration. You have not only saved the Lisbon Treaty, but you are also a rock of stability in the storms of the financial crisis.
The Bundestag's approval of the extended EFSF was a sign of confidence in your leadership and in the EU's ability to manage the crisis.
I am sure together, we can build a new and solid financial architecture. We can accomplish what the EU's founding fathers dreamt of: an economic and political union.
The European Parliament believes that the economic government of the EU should follow the community method. We in the EP are prepared to tackle the problems that are necessary to be solved in order to avoid further financial and economic difficulties.
We are also prepared to strengthen our cooperation between the three institutions responsible for EU legislation: Commission, Council and Parliament. We should introduce something like fast-track legislation for specific cases. It depends on all three institutions.
We are ready to start discussions. Sometimes we should react much quicker to the expectations of markets, enterprises and of course of our citizens.
For the European Parliament, it is very important that all the decisions taken in the euro zone are open for other member states."
