Vrouwen discussiëren in Polen over gelijke rechten (en)
The 3rd Congress of Women was organized within the frameworks of the Polish EU Presidency by the Congress of Women association with the collaboration of the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy. It was held in Warsaw on 17th and 18th September 2011. Over six thousand women participants from all over Poland arrived in Warsaw at their own expense to take part in the event. Joanna Fedak, the Minister of Labour and Social Policy, Viviane Reding i the EU Commissioner responsible for Justice, Fundamental Rights and Citizenship, Edite Estrela Vice-Chair of the Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality, as well as ministers for Gender and Employment Equality from 20 EU Member States were among the guests of the congress.
Donald Tusk, the Polish Prime Minister, was an unexpected guest, who was kindly greeted on the first day of the meeting.
During the panel discussions and round-table talks of EU ministers, the following problems were discussed: the issue of difference in remuneration for the same work, ways of combining a career with the family role, and problems related to women’s participation in management boards of corporations.
Poland is a leader in combating discrimination in the labour market and has some achievements to boast about: some of the longest paid maternity leaves in Europe, implemented 2-week fathers’ leaves, effective law which facilitates care for small children up to 3 years of age.
We have also problems similar to those of other countries. Despite their high level of education, women are less likely to get promoted and they don’t earn as much as men. It takes them quicker to lose a job and longer to find it.
The participants of the Congress emphasised the fact that only the Europe of equal opportunities guarantees the success in the global competition.
