TOP YOUNG SCIENTISTS COMPETE IN HELSINKI

The 23rd edition of the European Union Contest for Young Scientists (EUCYS) will take place in Helsinki at Suvilahti, an old power plant that has been used since the 1980s for cultural projects. For almost a quarter of a century, the contest has been bringing together the brightest young minds in European science highlighting the importance of innovation and research for future generations. This year, 87 projects from 37 countries and the EU schools have been selected to compete.

This year's contestants comprises more than 130 talented science students, aged between 15 and 21, who will compete to be acclaimed as the best European young scientists of 2011. They will present their projects, covering a wide range of scientific fields, to a prestigious International scientific jury, the national and international press and the general public in the hope of winning not only a prize but also the recognition of their peers.

Helsinki's edition will not only offer the contestants the possibility to meet and compete with the best of their contemporaries at European and international level but also to participate in a range of exciting activities organised for them in the Finnish capital. They will visit and participate in activities in some of the top Finnish universities and attend conferences with eminent scientific personalities.

Background of the EUCYS

EUCYS is an initiative of the European Commission, aimed at boosting interest in the sciences and creating dynamism among young science students to foster their talents and encourage them to follow careers in science and technology. In order to qualify for this prestigious contest, students must win first prize at their own national science contests. This annual event is an opportunity to showcase students’ best scientific achievements.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE PRESS

1. On site

Journalists are being invited to come and meet the young scientists at the contest in Helsinki from 25-28 September 2011. As a journalist, this invitation will give you:

  Opportunities to get with a good look at this year’s projects as well as the chance to interview young scientists from your own country as well as from all over the world
• - 

  Access to a whole host of fascinating side events, conferences, meals
• - 

  Visiting the projects exhibition
• - 

  A place at the Grand Award Ceremony announcing the winners of 2011 followed by the possibility to interview the winners directly (Tuesday 27 September
• - 

  The chance to cover the event using the video crew (cameraman, sound technician and ENG will be at your disposal and film your piece on the spot. You will be offered a copy of the tape immediately after filming ) provided by the European Commission*

However, no transport or accommodation costs will be paid by the European Commission.
