Ook na verkiezingen blijft Abchazië volgens Europarlement onderdeel van Georgië (en)
Following the presidential elections in the breakaway region of Abkhazia in Georgia, the President of the European Parliament Jerzy Buzek i stated:
"These elections do not change the position which the European Parliament holds on the breakaway region of Abkhazia in Georgia. Abkhazia is an autonomous region part of Georgia and the European Parliament is committed to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia.
The lack of support by the international community of the idea of an independent sovereign Abkhazia state shows the feebleness of the claims underpinning the demands of secessionist politicians in Sukhumi.
Three years after the conflict, Russia still does not respect the agreements of 12 August and 8 September 2008 on the withdrawal of troops to the pre-conflict positions from the Georgian occupied province of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. Russia should also cease issuing passports to the people of the occupied provinces.
The European Parliament views favourably the integration strategy of the Georgian government towards the breakaway regions, especially in the socio-economic field and on people-to-people level. While supporting the Geneva International Discussions for the future of the region, the EP also strongly encourages the final resumption of official relations between Moscow and Tbilisi."
