Štefan Füle following his meeting with Dervis Eroglu, leader of the Turkish Cypriot community

"Today I met the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community, Dervis Eroglu. Mr Eroglu shared with me his assessment of the recent tripartite meeting in Geneva between himself, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the leader of the Greek Cypriot community, Demetris Christofias.

I reiterated the strong support of the European Commission for the efforts of the leaders of both communities and the United Nations to achieve a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem, which will bring an end to one of the oldest conflicts on European soil. Mr Eroglu and I discussed the way ahead after last week's tripartite meeting and the importance of reaching agreement on the outstanding core issues by October, and I appealed to the leadership and spirit of compromise required to achieve this outcome.

Besides the settlement talks we discussed issues related to trade across the Green Line, as well as the aid programme for the Turkish Cypriot community. I assured Mr Eroglu of the Commission's commitment to continue the support for the Turkish Cypriot community in the future, and I informed him of the financial assistance in 2011 and - particularly in case of a settlement and unification of the island - in 2012."
