Baltazár Theatre’s performance in the Hungarian Institute of Culture in Brussels on 24 May was a great success.

Baltazár Theatre was founded in 1998 with the aim of giving an opportunity for disabled people to live off their talent. They are the only theatre company in Hungary formed by mentally disabled actors and actresses. The company has produced 11 performances since the beginning, which have gained wide popularity not because of the unusual casting but because they are professional and valuable productions.

”The achievment of Baltazár Theatre is especially respectable in the light of the fact that they operate without any financial support from the state. Their national and international success is the result of the founders’ and members’ commitment and hard work.” - said Kinga Göncz EP representative, who invited the company to Brussels. The idea to invite such companies to the EU capital was raised at the EP forum, and Baltazár were the first to get an opportunity to intruduce themselves to EU.

After the performance, the audience watched two short films: ’The world is round’ (Kerek a világ) by László Szalai and Gergely Tuli, which won first prize at the De Jure Foundation’s tender in the ’equal opprtunities and social integration’ category, and a documentary about the work of the Early Development Centre in Budapest.
