Met dank overgenomen van M. (Martin) Schulz i, gepubliceerd op dinsdag 10 mei 2011.

The President of the European Parliament Jerzy Buzek i met with Volodymyr Lytvyn the Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on the margins of the extraordinary meeting of the Bureau of the parliamentary Assembly of the Parliaments of Poland, Lithuania and Ukraine which was held in Strasbourg on Tuesday 10th May.

After the meeting the President said:

"During our open and honest discussion with Speaker Lytvyn I noted the progress made by Ukraine in advancing its dialogue with the EU, especially in talks on the Association Agreement and the deep and comprehensive free trade agreement. I acknowledged the importance of achieved political stability.

However I also shared our concern in particular on the situation of freedom of press, rule of law and independence of judiciary in Ukraine. The compatibility in our systems is essential. Our fresh experience deriving from the developments in North Africa show beyond doubt that stability without democracy does not work.

I expressed to Speaker Lytvyn that the European parliament is politically united behind the motion of having the closest possible relations with Ukraine. We hope that the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly, only recently set up, will serve as an important tool in this regard"
