Speech by János Martonyi in Florence, Italy

On 9 May 2011, János Martonyi gave a speech during a conference that was organised by the European University Institute in Florence, Italy, on the occasion of the Festival d’Europa.

In his speech, Hungary’s Foreign Minister stressed, among other things, the importance of strengthening and extending European cooperation and solidarity. “The European Union is a community of fundamental values, in which solidarity plays a fundamental role. As a sign of this solidarity, the EU provides half of all development aid,” said Martonyi, in a speech titled, “The European Union’s Role in the World from the EU Presidency Perspective” at the State of the Union Conference in Florence. Martonyi said the Union as a community, must strive to play a global role with a mission to promote global governance practices. Popularising European regulations and involving more participants, for instance in the field of finances, could be good ways to that end, he stressed. Martonyi said the EU needs to strengthen institutional cooperation and speed up integration, to achieve its goals. We stand well to reach our goals, he said.

Martonyi attended the Galileo Award ceremony after the event.
