The Military Committee of the European Union visited the EU Satellite Centre in the Torrejón (Madrid) air base on Monday, as part of an official visit coinciding with the Spanish Presidency of the European Union.
Part of the general objectives of the Spanish Presidency for the improvement of operability in the EU, the Military Committee's interest focuses on two essential capabilities for military operations which are space surveillance and strategic deployment.
The EU Military Committee, chaired by General Hakan Syrén, represents the 27 Chief Heads of Defence of the EU Member States.
During the visit they were accompanied by the leaders of other European organisations such as the General Staff and the General Directorate of Planning and Crisis Management.
After visiting the Torrejón Satellite Centre, the European delegation will travel to Seville on Tuesday, where they will hold an informal meeting to analyse the role of the Military Committee in the development of EU military capabilities and other issues.
They also plan to visit the EADS-CASA facility in the capital of Andalusia.
