The European Ministers of Education will meet in Brussels on Monday to exchange points of view on the role of education and training in the EU effort to promote economic growth and generation of employment in the framework of the “Europe 2020” Strategy.
The Education, Youth and Culture Council (EYC) will be chaired by the Spanish Minister Ángel Gabilondo, who will lead discussion on two questions:
What is the role of education and training in Europe's efforts to promote growth and jobs, together with equal opportunity and social cohesion?
How, in practical terms, can education ministers contribute to the future “Europe 2020” agenda and to ensuring adequate resources for the education and training sector?
Promotion of the social dimension of education and equality in educational systems are among the priorities of the Spanish Presidency of the European Union. Based on the positions of the Member States, Minister Gabilondo will seek a consensus on a set of conclusions to be adopted at the next EYC Council which will take place in May.
The EU-27 will also analyse progress toward the goals set for 2007-2009 in educational matters, and will sign a collaboration agreement with Switzerland under the "Youth in Action" community programme.
