Zweeds Voorzitterschap namens EU zeer bezorgd over sluiten kantoren van presidentskandidaten in Iran (en)
The Presidency of the European Union expresses its concern regarding the reported police raid and closure of the office of Mr. Karroubi, one of four presidential candidates in the June elections, on 8 September. The Presidency also expresses its concern regarding the recent closure of several other organisations’ offices and the arrests taking place in connection herewith, including several of Mr. Moussavi’s and Mr. Karroubi’s staff members. This would appear to be a concerted effort by the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran to quiet peaceful opposition and stop the dissemination of information regarding the situation of persons imprisoned after the elections in Iran.
The Presidency remains deeply concerned by the overall human rights situation in Iran and urges the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran to release all who have been detained and charged for peacefully expressing their opinions, in accordance with the Government’s commitments under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, and to provide full information regarding the fate of those persons still being imprisoned.
