South Ossetia: Congress President Yavuz Mildon calls for an immediate cessation of hostilities

Strasbourg, 08.08.2008 - "I call on all parties to South Ossetia's conflict in Georgia to establish an immediate ceasefire and re-launch the search for political solutions to this crisis," stated today Yavuz Mildon, President of the Council of Europe Congress of Local and Regional Authorities.

"I am convinced that the parties have not exhausted all possibilities for finding a political solution to this conflict in the framework of international law and existing legal instruments. The new Charter of Regional Democracy of the Congress, for example, could offer all parties useful pointers for reflection. But the urgency of the situation demands above all an immediate cessation of hostilities," said President Mildon.
