The EESC stresses the importance of continued reform in Turkey

A few days before the departure of Mr Dimitris Dimitriadis, President of the EESC, to Istanbul to participate in the 24th meeting of the EU-Turkey Joint Consultative Committee (JCC) that will be held on 10-11 April 2008, the President expresses his full support for the reform process that is currently taking place in Turkey.

The reform process should be seen as a window of opportunity for Turkey and an occasion to correct the provisions that are causing problems for Turkey's democracy.

The President also underlines the importance of searching for a broad consensus between the Turkish government and Turkish civil society on constitutional and institutional reforms.

The EESC welcomes the achievements so far and supports the approach to the accession negotiations taken by the European Commission and in particular by the Commissioner for Enlargement, Mr Olli REHN i.

For information: the EU-Turkey JCC is an official body bringing together representatives of organised civil society in the EU (via the EESC) and Turkey. Its members come from diverse economic and social interest groups representing civil society in the various countries.

The European Economic and Social Committee represents the various economic and social components of organised civil society. It is an institutional consultative body established by the 1957 Treaty of Rome. Its consultative role enables its members, and hence the organisations they represent, to participate in the Community decision-making process. The Committee has 344 members, who are appointed by the Council of Ministers.
