Signing of the EC-Japan customs cooperation agreement

The agreement between the Government of Japan and the European Community on cooperation and mutual administrative assistance in customs matters was signed today in the premises of the Council of Ministers in Brussels, between Mr. Igor Sen?ar, Slovenian Permanent Representative to the EU and chairman of the Permanent Representatives Committee, Mr. Takekazu Kawamura, Ambassador of the Mission of Japan to the EU, and Mr. Hervé Jouanjean, Deputy Secretary General of the European Commission. The agreement, which had been initialled in June 2007 will enter into force on 1 February 2008.

This agreement provides an ideal framework to discuss all customs related issues and problems such as trade facilitation, enforcement of intellectual property rights legislation and fight against counterfeit as well as security of the logistic supply chain, which are priority areas for the EU and for Japan.
