Met dank overgenomen van Portugees voorzitterschap Europese Unie 2e helft 2007 i, gepubliceerd op woensdag 21 november 2007.

The minister for home affairs, Rui Pereira, participates in a troika with Russia, on 22 and 23 November, in Brussels. Several themes will be discussed, such as fight against terrorism, visa facilitation and readmission agreements, asylum, fight against illegal immigration and issues related with borders.

This meeting will start on the 22nd with a dinner, and will have the participation of the vice president of the European Commission, Franco Frattini, the minister of the interior from the Russian Federation, Rashid Nurgaliev, the head of the presidential administration, Viktor Ivanov, the minister of the interior from Slovenia, Dragutin Mate and the Portuguese, Russian and Slovenian ministers of justice.

This meeting is part of the promotion of the strategy for the external dimension of justice and home affairs, one of the aspects included in the 18 month programme of the trio of presidencies, with the objective of reinforcing relations between the European Union and its neighbouring countries.

This troika is another important step towards the consolidation of a common space for freedom, security and justice, approved at the Moscow Summit, on 10 May 2005. It should be recalled that, regarding the themes to be discussed in the troika, the coming into force of the visa facilitation and readmission agreements was one of the issues to be dealt with during the EU-Russia Summit, which took place in October, in Lisbon, when the importance of its full implementation was stressed.
