In order to avoid accusations of manipulation, UK ministers have decided to ask a very straightforward question in the referendum on the EU Constitution, according to the Financial Times.

"Should the United Kingdom approve the Treaty establishing a Constitution for the European Union?", is the question that is to face UK voters.

The exact wording of the question will be decided later today. But since the bill will not be published before next year, there is still a possibility that the wording could be changed.

Simple wording is seen as a victory for Foreign Secretary Jack Straw. Some wanted to add that the constitution had been endorsed by parliament.

Recent polls suggest that a majority of UK citizens are against the Constitution, which has to be ratified by all member states before it comes into force.
